Washing Instructions

For Down Garments:

  1. Only use a front loading washing machine... NEVER a top loading agitator type.
  2. Set the temperature to cold water.
  3. Use a down specific cleaner such as Nikwax, Down Wash Direct in the recommended amount.
  4. NEVER use ordinary soap powder or fabric softener - these will badly affect the feathers recovery after washing.
  5. After the wash cycle is complete, do another 1-2 rinse cycles.
  6. Set your tumble dryer to its LOWEST setting and tumble dry the jacket until totally dry. Put 2-3 new tennis balls in the tumble dryer - this helps "knead" the down and avoid clumps.

Washing Instructions Gore-Tex® Waterproof and/or Outerwear Garments (Non-Down)

It's easy to wash your Outerwear and your Gore-Tex® Waterproof pieces!
  • Machine wash in warm water with liquid detergent (preferably Nikwax TX Direct Wash-In treatment or something similar)
  • Tumble dry on medium heat.
  • We do not recommend the use of powdered soaps or any soaps containing fabric softeners, conditioners, stain removers or bleach when washing outerwear.

For more detailed Gore-Tex laundering recommendations, visit the Gore-Tex® website.

How to Revive your Gore-Tex® Waterproof Outerwear Garments (Non-Down)

Like virtually all rainwear, Gore-Tex® outerwear comes with a DWR (durable water repellent) treatment on its outer surface. DWR causes water to bead up and roll off the garment. This clears the fabric surface so that sweat and body heat can pass through from the inside. It also keeps the fabric surface drier, which makes your outerwear light and comfortable.

Eventually, with regular laundering and exposure to the elements, DWR treatments can wear off. When this occurs, water no longer beads on the surface of the fabric, and the fabric may absorb some water. (The Gore-Tex® barrier beneath the outer fabric, however, will still stop this moisture from getting to your skin.)

There is no such thing as permanent water-repellent treatment. Over time, the original repellent finish will be depleted and you'll need to use a spray-on or wash-in water-repellency treatment to treat the fabric. You may repeat this process as many times as needed.

  • Fire step: cleaning: Follow the cleaning instructions above for the type of rainwear you own. Washing away dirt and oils does much to restore a DWR's water-shedding abilities.
If the steps above aren't enough to revive your DWR (i.e., rain still soaks into the exterior fabric of your jacket), it's time to reapply a new DWR coating. This eventually becomes necessary due to excessive abrasion, repeated contact with hipbelts and shoulder straps or simply years of multiple launderings).

  • Next Step: apply DWR Treatment: A DWR can be reapplied via a spray-on or wash-in DWR revival product from companies such as Nikwax, Granger's McNett or Penguin. Follow the care instructions that are listed on these wash-in / spray-on products for best outcome.

Pro-Tip:
  1. Spray worn abraded areas with a DWR aftercare product.
